For nearly 25 years I have been rooted deep in the rich rural Iowa soil; absorbing up the culture, customs, and traditions. For the most part, these “nutrients” came from my surroundings, family, friends, and coworkers; eventually, allowing me to develop what most outsiders call “The Iowan Hospitality.” Then came a time where I felt root-bound behind one perspective and developed the need to be placed in another environment containing different nutrients. Any transition might provide a bit of "shock" at first, but once a footing is grasped, a grander strength will follow. In my case I’ve reached this point, I’m ready to be placed in Argentinean soil and gain a new international perspective to make myself a stronger, global-minded individual.
It's only about 5,500 miles |
As many of you already know, I will be living and working in
Buenos Aires, Argentina from June to September. In January, I accepted an
internship working for the marketing/pr division of an application development
company called Uplifted. Even though I accepted the internship in January, it
wasn’t official until I purchased my airfare. February 7, 2013, it got real
because this was the exact date when the plane tickets were in my possession.
How do I remember this date so vividly, you ask? Well, it was the day just before
I had my wisdom teeth extracted; and who could forget a pain like that?
With May 31st as my departure date, I now had a
deadline to follow. By this date I had to completely transition and restructure
my life. Complete Drake’s MBA program. Leave my current job. Move my personal
items back home. Secure my financial situation. Research the ins-and-outs of
Argentina. All of these things and more had to be done by May 31st,
but I was up for the challenge. Growing up in rural Iowa, you tend to develop important
life characteristics that can be used in any stage of your life; responsibility,
determination, and a hard work ethic are just naming a few.
Until I return on September 13th, I will be living the Argentinean way. I intend improve my Spanish speaking skills, learn how to cook authentic Argentine cuisine, and become an expert tango dancer! Life is a novel packed full of blank pages. Ambitions layout the chapters while your actions write the book.
